facing forward looking back

by looking to the past we are able to look forward. where we have come from often determines where we are heading. looking at old work is like peering at childhood photos, we instantly recognize our inherent qualities and characteristics. we are looking at oursleves from another time, maybe less mature, less worldly, less wise but just as valid and truthful and pure. aspects of our creative output are destined to change, but it is heartening to discover a pattern or process that appears again and again, a nagging persistant something that needs to be expressed. it is a defining character trait, like a crooked nose or freckles and it will exist as long as you exist.
